Mr. Gaw didn't suffer the biggest smackdown in yesterday's GCS election, losing by 237 votes out of 881 votes cast. Yesterday's SLAMMY Award went to Mr. Gaw's proposed Charter Amendment that would have allowed the City Manager to live on Mars and commute to work as a simple majority of elected officials saw fit. That amendment crashed to the mat in the cage match, losing by 246 votes out of 910 votes cast.
As long as the City Manager has a dwelling in the City Utility Service Area, the Charter cares less about where the City Manager maintains his Homestead Exemption, as long as he/she is somewhere in the neighborhood in the event of a disaster.
The runner-up for the SLAMMY award in yesterdays election, was the Jim Arnold Amendment. This was another Gaw-conceived amendment that allowed the City Attorney to live and have offices in Atlanta, as long as a few members of council thought it was cool. The Voters, who have rejected similar Charter Amendments in 2019 and 2024, didn't think the idea was that cool and rejected the amendment again in 2025 by 100 votes.
The biggest winner in yesterday's election, besides the long-suffering citizens of Green Cove Springs, was Clay News and Views. Tjhe authors for this publication did their homework; presented the public with honest journalism; and kept many of us entertained.
Most importantly, it helped to get our citizens out of the mindset that their opinions don't matter and it got them out to vote. Clay News and Views helped to prevent democracy from dying in Green Cove Springs.
Thank you Peter, Josh, and Suzie for being true to journalistic standards.
SO GLAD ED GAW LOST! Intentionally cancelled a business trip so I could be home today to vote against him. Leaving tomorrow instead. Happy Mr. Centracchio won.
