Residents took time out of their lives to attend a public meeting, educate themselves, ask questions, and express legitimate concerns. They deserved patience, professionalism, and respectful answers, not dismissiveness, interruptions, sarcasm, or an attitude that suggested their concerns were an inconvenience.
You don’t have to agree with every constituent. You don’t even have to like what they’re saying. But when you accept public office, listening to the public is part of the job.
Clay County residents should be able to question their government without being made to feel foolish, unwelcome, or bothersome for doing so. Public service requires serving the public, especially when the conversation is uncomfortable.
If our commissioners want residents to trust local government, that trust has to be earned through transparency, professionalism, and respect.
