New Scholarship
School Board Member Robert Alvero launched a new scholarship in conjunction with the Clay County Education Foundation. Using funds from a recent state pay raise, Alver has created an opportunity for a few local graduating seniors to help pay for college.
Per the Education Foundation’s website, the “Robert Alvero Scholarship is awarded to provide financial assistance to a graduating Clay County high school senior seeking to attend a post-secondary institution. Two scholarships will be awarded- One $1,000 scholarship open to students from any Clay County high school, and one $500 scholarship open to Ridgeview and Oakleaf High School seniors only.”
Applicants must have attended Clay County schools for at least a year, have a 3.0 GPA, and plan to attend a Florida university, college, or technical college.
Alvero commented to Clay News & Views, “I wanted to give back to my community, which has given me so much and helped me reach my current position. I will always do my best to honor them.”
House Fire Kills One
On the afternoon of December 12th, a house in the Lake Asbury area caught fire. One person was reported to have died in the blaze, but no details on the cause or identity of the victim have been provided yet. More information can be found at First Coast News.
Agricola Development Files For Permits
The 4,000-home master planned community in Green Cove Springs, dubbed “Agricola,” has begun the permit application process. Approved last year, the community is designed to be a reinvention of the typical American suburb, aiming to make a new neighborhood feel like an old-fashioned small town.
Sheriff Cook Launches Relaunches Podcast
The Clay County Sheriff’s Office and Sheriff Michelle Cook re-launched the Never Off Duty podcast. Launched initially as a vehicle to spread CCSO news and featuring Judson Sapp amid his campaign for the state legislature, the new season replaces Sapp with former news broadcaster Ben Ryan and more video-centric content. The first two episodes are now available on YouTube.
