Glaze of Glory: Grocery Store Donut Showdown
Which Budget Friendly Option Gives The Best Donut Experience?
When you say you are going to get donuts from somewhere, like for a party, sometimes grocery stores are a better and cheaper option than actual donut shops. I am going to break down the three grocery store chains Classic Glazed Donuts today. We begin with the baseline—the unadorned glazed—where there are no toppings to hide behind.
Winn-Dixie:

The icing is wet. This donut was not pleasant to hold. Mind you, it doesn’t make the donut soggy. It had a chewy mouthfeel.
The dough is dense, even though the picture looks fluffy and light.
The flavor overall is reminiscent of a Honey Bun. If I wanted to eat a Honey Bun, I would have bought one.

Publix:

You know that fragrant aroma when you walk into a bakery? The air smells of freshly baked bread. The Publix donuts have that smell.
The icing is not too overwhelming. Some icings overpower the donut's flavor. This pairs very well, and you can taste both the donut and the icing. It barely has the crackle of a Krispy Kreme donut.
It was a pillowy feeling donut.

Walmart:

There is no distinctive aroma to this donut, unlike Publix.
This had a bready taste. It isn’t a bad observation. It must have a similar yeast flavor to a dinner roll.
The icing had a good sweetness level. This donut lacked flavor in the icing. It probably needs that vanilla undertone that most icing includes.

The Winner
Ok, time for the Sweet Victory!
As you can guess, Winn Dixie came in Third Place with its sticky-finger glazed donut.
I give Walmart Second Place for its doughy delight.
And for First Place, I have chosen Publix for its bakery confections.
One last note, to liven up a plain treat into something even better for a party or function, you can have these decorated. Any grocery bakery will do this for you. I honestly forgot to ask if it costs extra. Here are 2 examples a friend made for me when we found out what we were having during both of my pregnancies.

I hope this was informative! Next time, I will get to the good stuff with the donut shops around town! What a way to spend my Birthday Month!

Pizza is a sensitive subject. People are very adamant about likes and dislikes when it comes to America’s favorite food. How is the crust? What toppings are acceptable? Is the sauce sweet or zesty, and too much or too little?

What about the cannolis? Hands down Publix wins out of your donut store options as well!
