Oakleaf Junior High Student Brings Gun to School
A Code Red lockdown was initiated and charges against the student are pending.
Around 2 pm on Wednesday Clay County School District PD announced Oakleaf Junior High School was under a Code Red lockdown. The school had received reports that a student had brought a firearm to the campus.
The student in question had already been detained when the information was posted to social media. At some point during the incident, calls and emails were also sent out to the parents of students at the school. The lockdown was lifted around 3:30 and the school dismissed students via their normal procedures.
An update to the original post later indicated that charges against the student were pending:
“Through the investigation, the Clay County District Schools Police Department has the student of interest in custody as a firearm has been discovered on campus today. We will continue to have zero tolerance for this behavior and charges are pending”
The post also commended the staff and students of the school for speaking up when they see something unsafe in the school:
“We always encourage our Yellow Jackets that if they see something, then say something, and today is an example of how our students worked together in doing just that. I want to commend our students, staff, and faculty for following our safety procedures and protocols today.”
This is the second incident of a gun being brought to a school in the Oakleaf area, as a gun was found on the campus of Oakleaf High School in March of 2023.
