This is so sophomoric. Shame on "King" Broskie! If the Board makes policy - then the Board can make a policy for the Superintendent to deliver all presentation materials well in advance of a presentation with sufficient time to read the materials. Instead of working with the Board -- Broskie places himself above the board -- and that's not serving the taxpayer or the students. Get with the program Brownie -- or move on!
I hope that Mr. Broskie understands that his position is elected by the voters. This kind of "you can't tell me what to do" attitude is unacceptable. Ms. Hanson was only trying to point out that the members, be it a voted or non-voted agenda item should be given to the board members early to review and be prepared for any questions they might have. As Ms. Hanson stated, companies that have meetings provide agendas and meeting items PRIOR to meetings so that attendees can be prepared. Obviously by Mr. Broskie's body language and his forceful, negative, dismissive, and abrasive responses to Ms. Hanson, he prefers NOT to be challenged or questioned. The parents and teachers of Clay County deserve a Superintendent who is focused on making the learning environment better and one who is open to suggestions and ideas. If anyone has not noticed, there has been a wave of issues (approximately 8-9) at schools with threats since the school year started. There have been two arrests involving those threats. I hope that Mr. Broskie is taking these seriously and not serving in his self gratification of power when this is brought up at meetings. I no longer have children in the Clay County school system, but I am concerned for the safety and security of our students, teachers, and admisnitrators.
Broskie is a "real" role model for our high school graduates looking for jobs. He told a board member, "You Aren't the Boss of Me."
According to the Florida Department of Education's current information on the 67 counties in Florida, 38 counties elect superintendents and 29 appoint them. Florida and Alabama are the only two states in the country that allow some voters to select the head of their school district. I guess 48 states must know something we don't.
A good education is the great equalizer and the key to success. Why wouldn't Clay County parents and residents want the very best superintendent to lead the education of its children? Selecting the most qualified – education, credentials, experience, etc. is a huge step to make quality education a reality. Generally, most people vote for the person they like.
What Ms. Hanson asked him to do was not out of line. All board members should have access to the documents being discussed or voted on at a meeting well before the meeting. Transparency is key to ensuring that everyone is on the same page and can contribute effectively. What's the big secret?
Time for appointed superintendent for Clay County?
Think back. Have any of you reading this article ever told your boss that he/she could not direct you?
You would have been fired. What a rude thing to say. Mr. Broskie, rise above your hateful attitude and show some civility.
Mr. Broskie might have addressed the request differently if he had not been guaranteed another four years on the job.
"Just a little clarification Mr. Broskie: the board can direct the superintendent if he/she is appointed.
We want to have the material prior to be better prepared.
and he says,
NO. What a jerk.
I say, bye.
Town of Orange Park schools need our school board member for our district to start getting involved with the town of orange parks town council. Our schools need help and attention. Our military families deserve the best for the children that move every two to three years. They need to feel welcome, safe and accepted. They usually come from better schools depending where they transferred from…. It is a fact. Our schools are not that good at all. I have had kids attending schools throughout the east coast for the past 30 years and by far these schools are the worst.
I agree that what Ms Hanson was asking for was not an unreasonable request. It would not diminish the presenters presentation but rather enhance it. When you are in a meeting and have 15-20 pages of a slide show presentation dumped on your head, I don’t care how intelligent you are, or how many degrees you have, you can not have informed questions and input that add value. After all this is the purpose of the presentation correct?? Or are we just going through the motions doing a bunch of busy work, saying we had a meeting, and accomplishing nothing?? That’s not the reason Michele Hanson is on this board. SHE is actually there to get some work done. We have been kicking cans down the road long enough. Let’s get to work. What Clay County needs is about 4 more like Michele Hanson. Then we would get something done. Thank you Ms Hanson
I disagree. If the presentations are informational overviews only, receiving them early might cause the board members to form opinions before hearing from the expert presenter. Seeing how the board member spoke over and interrupted the superintendent it’s obvious she would do the same to a presenter before they had the chance to present. The board can ask their questions during the presentation and follow up afterwards. That’s how it usually works. She expended way too much time not making a point!
