Good article, definitely some important info that I was unaware of. I think that at some point however the Clay County residents are not going to get the service they deserve from the county commissioners position if it doesn’t pay a reasonable amount commensurate with the duties. In short you get what you pay for….of course full accountability is a given.
Transparency, public input, and clear ballot language are critical when it comes to changes that impact our local government. Regardless of where anyone stands on the issue, giving residents the opportunity to review the facts and cast their vote is exactly how the process should work.
Civic engagement matters and this is a good example of our local system working as intended. Taxpayers will decide in November it seems on the Personal Property Tax reductions with homesteading.
Spending needs to take this into consideration when approving pay for anyone in government.
I agree that the Commissioner pay needs to be addressed. But unfortunately the CRC may have poisoned the well with the way they’re approaching the issue.

I did a quick google search and found an article that confirms what you reported on past Clay County Commissioners- scandalous on the $9 million taxpayer dollars and they are correct. None of them should ever hold an elected position ever again: https://www.heraldtribune.com/story/news/2006/04/05/grand-jury-blasts-clay-officials-over-9-million-dumping-scandal/28470168007/
