If a red light camera was only about safety, not revenue, then all fines generated would be given to local charities, not to government. If it was about safety and deterrence, then infractions would be treated the same as if an officer issued a ticket for running the red light. In each case the act of the red light runner is the same.
Solid journalism uncovering the revolving door here. The former chief landing at Verra Mobility while pushing camera expansion creates an obvious conflictof interest. That 6% redlight violation rate in 138 crashes basically tells the story on its own. I worked in city procurement once and this exact scenariowould've triggered mandatory ethics review.
Red light cameras, in some instances, can cause accidents rather than prevent them as drivers slam on their brakes in fear of getting a ticket at a yellow light and end up inadvertently causing a rear-end collision. This is clearly just a money grab.
Wells rd and Kingsley ave are state roads right? How can the town put red light cameras on them and collect the cash? The county has flock cameras on some of those locations already, I believed but don’t know, it was allowed because they are state roads. Can someone explain?
Wells and 17 needs to set the timer for Wells longer, if you aren’t first in line you don’t get through. It is set for the traffic flow not the towns residents. My husband sat at Kingsley and 17 for 12 minutes after work one afternoon. 3 light cycles. It’s all about the flow for the people who drive through…
I know this is about red lights and retired town of orange parks police chief trying to sell us more so my thoughts on that are until you adjust some timers for the town residents let’s just fuss about the ones we have already.
Side note…. At a function recently I asked a person if they would come back to work here in town, I swear to my Loving God he said “not as long as you have red light cameras.”
Clay News and Views should rerun the article it ran 6 months (?) ago which compared data from the 10 yrs prior to red light cameras vs the 10 yrs with them.
